What is a Concrete
Tilt-Up?

Tilt-up concrete construction is a method where panels are lifted and tilted by crane to form building walls. These panels can be molded into various shapes and sizes including curved and flat sections. The placement of concrete is a quick and easy process that is done on the ground. Floors are used as casting beds, or separate casting beds can be created to stack the panels if space is limited. As the panels are cast on site, their size is not restricted by the need for transportation. Typically, panels are often of larger size to minimize the number of joints in the structure.

Sizes

Insulated panels feature a layered design, consisting of an outer face measuring two to three inches in thickness, insulation filling that spans two to six inches, and an inner structural layer that’s comparable in thickness to typical uninsulated panels. Connectors are strategically placed through the insulation in order to securely fasten the two concrete faces together. Meanwhile, uninsulated panels typically measure about seven to twelve inches in thickness.

Installation

After the casting process, the panels are securely installed onto the foundation/slab by detachment from the slab and lifting. The structural strength of the building is achieved through a combination of dowels from the slab and interconnectivity between adjacent panels. Panel bracing is enforced during wall creation. The lifting of the panels is performed efficiently and rapidly. Connections pre-cast into the concrete provide a reliable welding process for the panels. Following this, vertical joints are filled with high-quality sealants.

Finishes

Architectural concrete treatments provide intricate detailing and exceptional surface finishes to panels. Rustications and reveals can simulate the appearance of different panel sizes and shadow lines. In recent years, finishes and panel configurations have undergone substantial development, allowing these panels to offer the same versatility as other concrete wall systems. Common finishes include colored concrete, exposed aggregate, and form liner textures.
